The “Voices of Sankofa” event is a transformative gathering that reclaims Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples Day, emphasizing the need to honor and celebrate the rich history and contributions of Indigenous cultures. The event brings together a diverse array of guest speakers from various backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, and religions, each contributing their unique perspectives on the importance of acknowledging the past while fostering a united vision for the future.

Guests will engage in meaningful discussions centered around the concept of Sankofa, an African word that translates to “go back and get it,” symbolizing the importance of learning from our roots to inform our journey forward. Sankofa is derived from the Akan people of Ghana, which embodies the idea of looking back to understand our past in order to build a better future. Speakers will share stories, insights, and wisdom that highlight Indigenous traditions, practices, and values, reinforcing the idea that embracing these elements can lead to greater understanding and peace.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate and converse in interactive sessions aimed at cultivating dialogue around reconciliation, social justice, and community-building. The event will also feature cultural performances, art displays, and opportunities for networking, creating a vibrant atmosphere that fosters connection and collaboration. “Voices of Sankofa” ultimately seeks to inspire all participants to reflect on their own histories, acknowledge the injustices faced by Indigenous peoples, and commit to building a more inclusive and equitable society. It is a call to action for unity, respect, and the celebration of diversity as we work together towards a harmonious future.
Join us as we come together to reflect, learn, and take action—creating bridges toward a future grounded in respect, understanding, and harmony among all cultures. Let’s honor the past, acknowledge the present, and work collectively towards a more equitable tomorrow during this powerful event.
